Liverpool has the highest proportion of people’s income being spent on household bills in the UK.
On average people are spending 70% of their monthly income on bills, whereas for Liverpool the figure is 75%.
There is a lot of variation across the country – in Southampton, for example, people generally spend 60% of their income on household bills, the lowest percentage in the UK, leaving them with around £824 disposable income.
The report from Money Supermarket found in comparison that Scousers are left with only £490 a month to spend elsewhere.
MerseyNewsLive went into Liverpool city centre to see what people had to say.
Brenin Firsht, 21, said: “I think a lot of people struggle to get guarantors for buying or renting a house.
“The majority of their income goes on rent upfront, which is not fair because then people are left with practically no disposable income afterwards.
Susan Cliffe, 46, said: “Being from down south originally, I think on average, pay does reflect the monthly outgoing compared to the cost of living better, even though cost of living is higher there.
“I think Liverpool isn’t necessarily seen as a very expensive place to live but after all the bills on top of the price of everything else going up as well, I think everyone is struggling at the moment.”
Maya Senner, 25, said: “I don’t think Liverpool’s average income is enough to reflect how much people are paying in rent and for other bills. It’s just getting higher and higher.”

No way do we have £490 left over each month.
