An initiative has been launched in Liverpool encouraging Scousers to quit smoking for “Stoptober”, as new data reveals a record number of locals are stamping out the habit compared to previous years.

Whilst smoking is still the leading cause of preventable deaths and illnesses in Liverpool, the “Stoptober” campaign has revealed that the smoking rate has almost halved since 2013 with figures showing a reduction from 23.5% down to just 12.5% in 2023.

Prof Matthew Ashton, Liverpool Director of Public Health, said: “ Most adult smokers want to stop smoking, but on average it takes 30 attempts, and many never succeed.

“The consequences of smoking affect children, young people, families and neighbourhoods across Liverpool.

“I therefore urge all smokers to use the opportunity Stoptober provides to break free from cigarettes and never give up on giving up.”

Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool’s cabinet member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture said: “We are proud to support Stoptober once again because it provides a valuable opportunity for people to take that important step towards a healthier, smoke-free life.

“Quitting smoking is challenging, but it’s not something you have to do alone. There is a wealth of support available to help you succeed. Whether it’s advice, resources, or encouragement, services are here to support you every step of the way.

“By working together, we can continue to reduce smoking rates in our city and help more residents experience the life-changing benefits of quitting.”

Under the slogan “You’ve got what it takes to quit this Stoptober”, Smoke-free Liverpool offers support and advice services to those attempting to quit, providing free digital support, tools, information and quitting options.

They emphasise the campaign is there to sustain people’s journeys far beyond October, as going smoke-free for 28 days makes individuals five times more likely to quit for good.

Studies show significant health improvements with individuals’ breathing easier and feeling more energetic after just 72 hours.

Not only will people’s overall health and quality of life be improved but so will their finances. On average smokers can save around £59 a week by quitting smoking – which equates to £3,000 a year.
