There’s good news for hospitality workers as a new law on tipping has come into force today.
Introduced to parliament last year, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act and the statutory Code of Practice on fair and transparent distribution of tips came into force on October 1.
This means that employers have to give all gratuity, service charges and tips to workers without any deductions.
Employees must receive tips by the end of the following month.
They also must have a transparent written tipping policy which makes it clear to workers how they collect and distribute tips.
If an employer illegally withholds any tips the employee can bring a claim to an employment tribunal.
Wetherspoons employee, Jade Thorold said: “I think its a good idea because a lot of people do work harder and put more effort in to get tips. its a lot fairer on everyone.”
Workers union Unite have been campaigning for a fair tips act since 2007. They said the new legislation is a ‘big win’.
