Sonic Yootha is a monthly new wave, old rave, disco, electro, rock, pop, and soul social that has been going since 2015.
The club night is held at Baltic Triangle’s 24 Kitchen Street as an alternative LGBTQ+ night.
Unlike many gay clubs in the city that are usually associated with cheesy pop songs and strict door policies, Sonic Yootha is the opposite, priding themselves in providing a space for “homos, heteros, drag shows and don’t knows”.
The club night has been running since 2015, and has often been praised for saving Liverpool’s gay scene with the mixed crown of old, young, gay, straight, and drag queens.
Although labelled a ‘gay club night’, it is open to everyone no matter their sexuality – something some clubs still do in Liverpool.
Their motivation is ‘to celebrate and to educate’
Creators Ian Usher and John Aggy, who have been on the DJ scene for over 20 years, knew exactly what they did and didn’t want their club night to be.
Their motivation is ‘to celebrate and to educate’, particularly towards the younger generation, instead of it being an exclusive gay event.
Ian spoke to MerseyNewsLive about how they started: “Ian Richards hooked me up with a guy, who then brought John in who came up with the name. We wanted something that didn’t exist that was hard to achieve but we all had the same vision.
“We originally started with three nights in Camp and Furnace which didn’t work out. Then we found our home – Kitchen Street. I went in, spoke to the guys about this failed idea for a gay night for older people. They were so open-minded and supportive, and they still are.”
Most of their monthly events incorporate Scouse culture, their most recent Halloween event being called ‘Scalloween’, a play on words of the ‘scally’ culture in Liverpool.
