Anneliese Midgley has been selected as the Labour party candidate for the Merseyside borough of Knowsley.
If elected Anneliese will replace current Labour MP for the borough, Sir George Howarth, who plans to retire next election. George has held the seat since 1986. Knowsley is a Labour Safe Seat.
Ms Midgley managed to beat out ex Knowsley council deputy leader, Louise Harbour and Ryan Wain for the candidacy. Ms Midgley has been in Trade Unions since the beginning of her career, spending time working at Unite as a political director.
Coming from a trade union background, Ms Midgley has most recently worked in communications for the Trade Union Congress.
She has also worked as an advisor to current Labour Leader Keir Starmer and worked as an Aide to former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn and was his former chief of staff. Other important figures Ms Midgley has worked for include Ken Livingstone when he was Mayor of London.
Her rival for the Candidacy, Ryan Wain runs The Tony Blair institute’s for global change ‘Future of Britain’ and is close to the former Prime Minister.
The candidate was selected after local Labour party members heard from all three nominees and then voted in a hustings style event.
Ms Midgley already has the support of Trade Unionists and other Labour MP’s.
Midgley is also a Native of the Knowsley constituency having grown up in Stockbridge Village.
TUC General Secretary and Ms Midgley’s former boss tweeted “I will miss @anneliese_midgebecause she’s been brilliant at @The_TUC and a massive support for me as GS – but she will be a passionate, wonderful MP for Knowsley.”
Warrington North Labour MP Charlotte Nichols tweeted: “Buzzing to hear this! Congratulations to @anneliese_midge who will make a brilliant MP for everyone in Knowsley.”
The General election in which Ms Midgley will stand for is expected to take place later this year.
